WHAT IS SERTRALINE?

Sertraline (generic Zoloft®) is used to treat panic attacks, depression, obsessive compulsive disorders (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Sertraline works to help restore balance to certain natural chemicals in the brain.

Sertraline is also used to treat a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (premenstrual dysphoric disorder- PMDD) in women and premature ejaculation in men.

HOW TO USE

Take sertraline tablets by mouth, usually once a day. May be taken with or without food (or as directed by your doctor).

It is best to take your dose at the same time every day. Take it either in the morning or in the evening.

Your dosage will vary depending on your medical condition and your response to therapy.

It is important to continue taking sertraline even if you feel better.

It may take up to 4 weeks before the full benefits of sertraline take effect.

Do not stop taking sertraline without consulting with your doctor.

SERTRALINE SIDE EFFECTS

If any of these sertraline side effects continue or get worse, notify your doctor.

  • dizziness
  • diarrhea
  • dry mouth
  • drowsiness
  • headache
  • trouble sleeping
  • nausea, upset stomach

Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious sertraline side affects occur:

  • appetite loss

PRECAUTIONS

Tell your doctor your medical history, especially:

SERTRALINE and BREAST FEEDING

Sertraline will pass into breast milk. Because of the potential risk to the infant, breastfeeding while using this drug is not recommended. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

SERTRALINE DRUG INTERACTIONS

Serious, or fatal, drug interactions with certain other medications may occur.
For 2 weeks before or after taking sertraline, avoid taking MAO inhibitors, for example:

  • linezolid
  • moclobemide
  • furazolidone
  • isocarboxazid
  • phenelzine
  • selegiline
  • procarbazine
  • tranylcypromine

Sertraline is not recommended for use with:

  • astemizole
  • weight loss drugs, for example
    • sibutramine
    • phentermine
  • terfenadine

  • other SSRI antidepressants, for example:

  • blood thinners, for example
    • warfarin

  • propafenone
  • tryptophan
  • trazodone

Tell your doctor if you use drugs that could cause you to become drowsy, for example:

  • certain antihistamines (e.g., diphenhydramine)
  • anti-anxiety drugs (e.g., diazepam)
  • anti-seizure drugs (e.g., carbamazepine)
  • tranquilizers
  • sleep medicine
  • sedatives
  • narcotic pain relievers (e.g., codeine)
  • psychiatric medicines (e.g., phenothiazines such as chlorpromazine)
  • muscle relaxants

Tell your doctor if you take drugs which affect the heart rhythm (QTc prolongation), for example:

  • procainamide
  • dofetilide
  • pimozide
  • quinidine
  • sotalol
  • sparfloxacin
  • diuretics, for example:
    • furosemide
    • hydrochlorothiazide

Do not start or stop taking sertraline without your doctor's or pharmacist's approval.

SERTRALINE OVERDOSE

If an overdose of sertraline is suspected, contact your local poison control center (1-800-222-1222) or emergency room (911) immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include:

  • lightheadedness
  • fainting
  • severe dizziness
  • irregular heartbeat

NOTES

Do not share sertraline or any medication with others.

Your doctor may order laboratory and/or medical tests monitor your progress.

MISSED DOSE

If you miss a dose of sertraline, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip your missed dose. Resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

STORAGE

Store sertraline at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C). Avoid light and moisture. Do not store it in the bathroom.
