Older adults - There is no real information comparing the use of meclizine cyclizine, and buclizine in older adults with use in other age groups. Many medicines have not been studied specifically in the elderly. It is not known if they work exactly the same way as in younger adults. Older adults may be especially sensitive to the anticholinergic effects of these medicines, like difficult urination, constipation, and dryness of nose, mouth, and throat.

Allergies - Inform your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to meclizine, buclizine, or cyclizine. Also inform him or her if you are allergic to any other substances, such as foods, dyes or preservatives.

Drug Interactions - There are some drugs that should never be used together. There are other cases where two medicines used together will cause an interaction. It may still be safe to use both, but your physician may need to change the doses or take other precautions.

If taking meclizine, cyclizine, or buclizine, it is especially important that your doctor know if you are taking the following:

  • other medicines that make you drowsy or less alert
  • central nervous system depressants (CNS)
  • Tricyclic antidepressants - used with buclizine, cyclizine, or meclizine may increase side effects of either.


Tell your physician if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant. It has not been proven that these medicines cause birth defects or other problems in humans. But research using animals has shown that meclizine, buclizine and cyclizine, given in large doses, many times the usual human dose, can cause birth defects like cleft palate.

Tell your physician if you are breast feeding. These medicines can pass into breast milk, but they have not been shown to cause problems in nursing babies. Meclizine or cyclizine use can result serious breathing problems in patients who have any of these conditions

  • heart failure

Take these medicines only as directed. Do not take more often or take a larger dose than stated on the prescription label or prescribed by your doctor. Otherwise, side effects may be increased.


After a medication has been approved for marketing for a one use, experience may show that it is can also be useful for other medical conditions.     • Adults and teenagers - Usual dose is 50 milligrams (mg), 30 minutes before traveling. May be repeated every 4-6 hours if it is needed. Do not take more than 200 mg one day.

  • Injection dose:

    • Children - Dose will be based on their body weight. The most usual dose of 1 mg per kilogram (0.45 mg per pound) of body weight is injected directly into a muscle, three times a day as needed. Your doctor will determine the dose.

    • Adults and teenagers - Usual dose of 50 mg is injected directly into a muscle every 4-6 hours as needed.

Buclizine - Prevent motion sickness:

  • Oral dose (chewable tablets):

    • Adults and teenagers - Usually 50 milligrams (mg), 30 minutes before traveling. May be repeated every 4 - 6 hours if needed. Do not take more than 150 mg in one day.

    • Children - Your doctor will determine the dose.

For meclizine - Oral dose forms (tablets and chewable tablets):

  • To prevent and treat motion sickness:

    • Adults and children 12 and older -The usual dose is 25 to 50 milligrams (mg), taken 1 hour before travel. May be repeated every 24 hours if needed.

    • Children up to 12 - Doctor will determine dosage.

  • To prevent and treat vertigo (dizziness):

    • Adults and children 12 and older -The usual dose is 25 to 100 milligrams (mg) a day as needed. These doses are divided into smaller ones, taken throughout the day.

    • Children up to 12 - Doctor will determine dosage.


If you have a skin test for allergies, the results may be affected by these medicines. Tell your physicina if you will be having these tests.

If you take meclizine, buclizine or cyclizine tell your doctor if:

  • you are taking other CNS depressants (medicines that make you drowsy or less alert), like:

    • antihistamines or medications for hay fever other allergies or for colds
    • anesthetics, including some dental anesthetics
    • seizure medication
    • muscle relaxants
    • prescription pain medication
    • tranquilizers, sedatives, or sleeping medication
    • narcotics
    • barbiturates

  • you drink alcohol

These medications may decrease on alertness or cause drowsiness. Be sure you know how you will react before you use machines, drive, or do anything else that requires mental alertness.

Cyclizine, buclizine and meclizine may cause dry mouth. Gum, candy, ice bits melted in your mouth, or a saliva substitute may give temporary relief. If your mouth continues to feel dry for over two weeks, tell your doctor or dentist. Constant dry mouth may increase your risk of dental diseases. These may include tooth decay, gum disease, and fungus infections.


Not all of these side effects have been reported for each of these medicines. They have been reported for at least one of them, however. Cyclizine, buclizine, and meclizine are similar. Any of these side effects may occur with any of those medicines.

These side affects, if they occur, may go away as your body adjusts. However, tell your physician if they continue or are bothersome:

  • More common:
    • Drowsiness 

  • Less common or rare:
    • dizziness
    • fast heartbeat
    • blurred or double vision
    • constipation
    • diarrhea
    • difficult or painful urination
    • headache
    • dryness of mouth, nose, and throat
    • loss of appetite
    • upset stomach
    • skin rash
    • restlessness, nervousness, or trouble in sleeping
If you have any other side effects not listed, tell your doctor.


If you take these medications regularly and miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. But if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose, and continue with the regular dosing schedule. Do not double your doses.


Keep out of the reach of children.

Store these medications away from direct light and heat.

Heat and/or moisture can cause the medicine to break down. Do not store in the bathroom, near a sink or in other damp places.

Discard any outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed. Be sure that any discarded medication is out of the reach of children.
