PERMETHRIN DRUG INFORMATION, ABOUT PERMETHRINWHAT IS PERMETHRIN ?Permethrin (Generic Elimite®) kills parasites and their eggs. (It does not prevent these infestations, however.) It is used to treat lice infestations of the body, head, and pubic area ("crabs") and scabies (a skin infestation). HOW TO USE PERMETHRINPermethrin comes in a cream and liquid (cream rinse) to use externally. One application of permethrin will usually eliminate the parasites completely. However, you may need to repeat the treatment after 1 week. Call your doctor if signs of live parasites reappear. Carefully follow the directions on the package or prescription label. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Use permethrin exactly as directed. Do not use more or less or use more often than directed by your doctor. Wear rubber gloves when applying if you have open cuts or scratches on your hands. If you get permethrin in your eyes, rinse them thoroughly with water for at least 5 minutes. ![]() To use the liquid form, follow these steps:
To use the cream, follow these steps:
If you are treating head lice, wash combs and brushes with permethrin liquid. Rinse them thoroughly with water. PERMETHRIN PRECAUTIONSBefore you buy permethrin, tell your doctor and pharmacist:
PERMETHRIN and PREGNANCYTell your physician if you are pregnant. When applying permethrin to another person, wear gloves to prevent absorption through your skin. PERMETHRIN and BREAST FEEDINGTell your physician if you are breast feeding. PERMETHRIN SIDE EFFECTSPermethrin side effects are not common, but they can occur. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
STORAGEKeep permethrin in its original container, tightly closed and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature, away from excessive moisture and heat. Do not store in the bathroom. Throw away any permethrin that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal. OTHER INFORMATIONPermethrin is for external use only. Do not let permethrin get into your mouth, eyes or nose. Do not swallow. Unless your physician tells you to, do not apply lotions, cosmetics, bandages or dressings or other skin medications to the area being treated. After using permethrin, wash (or dry clean) all clothing, bed linen, and towels that you have used in the last 2 days. Be sure you use hot water. Dry everything in a hot dryer for at least 20 minutes. Thoroughly clean all bathtubs, showers, and toilets in your home with rubbing alcohol. The parasites may have been transmitted to members of your household and close contacts (including sexual contacts). Advise them to see a doctor if they develop symptoms of infestation. If you have scabies, your skin may have become sensitive and itching may continue for several weeks after the treatment. The itching does not mean that the treatment failed. Call your doctor if you have questions. Do not let anyone else use your permethrin.
